FAQ

Health Benefits

Are Kaigum's health benefits scientifically supported?

Yes, the health benefits attributed to Kaigum, primarily due to its xylitol content, are supported by numerous scientific studies.

These studies suggest benefits like a reduced risk of cavities, prevention of dental plaque, and the maintenance of a balanced oral pH.

For those interested in a deeper dive, our website showcases more than 80 scientific studies that support these benefits: https://kaigum.com/pages/scientific-studies.

What is so special about Kaigum's 100% xylitol content?

Chewing gum sweetened with 100% xylitol stands out due to its proven dental health benefits.

According to a review conducted by the health body of the European Commission, only gums sweetened solely with xylitol have been recognised for their ability to reduce dental plaque.

On the other hand, gums that contain xylitol but also include other sweeteners haven't received the same endorsement. By choosing 100% xylitol gum, you're optimising the dental benefits xylitol can provide.

Our Ingredients and Packaging

Why is Kaigum more expensive than other gum?

This is down to the focus on the high quality ingredients Kaigum uses, such as sustaible tree sap as the gum base and 1,500mg of xylitol per piece.

This is unlike cheaper gum on the market which is full of artificial sweeteners, petroleum gum base (which is effectively plastic) and artificial flavours.

What are Kaigum's ingredients?

Xylitol (sweetener from natural origin), natural chicle (gum base), natural flavourings, vegetable
glycerol, gum arabic & carnauba wax

What Sets Kaigum Apart from Regular Gum?

Kaigum's primary ingredient is xylitol, which offers significant health benefits. Unlike conventional gums, which typically contain a plastic gum base, mixed with artificial flavours and cheaper sweeteners like aspartame and ace-k, Kaigum is founded on quality.

We utilise natural tree sap as our gum base, steering clear of the petroleum-derived bases commonly used in other gums.

Additionally, our boxes offer a substantial 240 grams of gum, a stark contrast to the standard 14 grams typically found in store packs.

What is Xylitol?

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol....although the word “alcohol” is part of its name, it’s not the same alcohol that makes you drunk!

Xylitol naturally occurs in many fruits and vegetables and even our bodies produce small amounts of it during glucose metabolism.

Usage & Safety

Can children use Kaigum safely?

Yes this is perfectly safe for children (even schools encourage children in Finland to chew xylitol gum). However we advise against providing chewing
gum to any child under the age of 5 due to a choking risk

How many pieces of Kaigum should I chew per day?

All research on the benefits on xylitol for plaque reduction and teeth protection requires 6 grams chewed which equals 4 pieces of Kaigum a day.

It is important to note that the research conducted on xylitol's oral benefit found that the mouth must be 'bathed' in xyiltol for around 10-15 minutes, and the most effective way to do this is through chewing gum.

By following this protocol various studies consistently found a reduction in bad bacteria responsible for tooth decay, one study showed a reduction by up to 75% on top of recommended daily hygiene (brushing teeth and interdental cleaning). What are the safe levels of Kaigum (xylitol) consumption?

Xylitol, the primary ingredient in Kaigum, is generally well-tolerated by most individuals when consumed in moderation. For many adults, daily consumption of up to 20 grams (or roughly 13-15 pieces of our gum) is considered safe without resulting in any digestive discomfort. However, some individuals might be more sensitive to xylitol and experience digestive symptoms at lower amounts.

It's important to note that everyone's body reacts differently, and what's tolerable for one person might not be for another. If you're new to xylitol or Kaigum, we recommend starting with a smaller quantity and gradually increasing to see how your body responds.

Always listen to your body and be mindful of any changes. If you have specific health concerns or experience unusual symptoms, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional.

Is Kaigum safe to swallow?

Yes Kaigum is safe to swallow, however we always recommend spitting it out!

Is Kaigum safe whilst pregnant or breastfeeding?

Whilst pregnant or breastfeeding we always recommending first consulting with a medical professional before making any dietary changes.

Is xylitol unsafe for dogs?

Yes, xylitol is unsafe for dogs. While xylitol is a natural sugar substitute that provides numerous health benefits for humans, it's toxic to dogs and can lead to severe health complications. When ingested by dogs, even in small amounts, xylitol can lead to rapid insulin release, causing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Symptoms of xylitol poisoning in dogs include vomiting, loss of coordination, seizures, and in severe cases, it can be fatal.

It's worth noting that many household items and foods, such as raisins, chocolates, and certain artificial sweeteners, are also harmful to pets. It's crucial for dog owners to be aware and keep such items, including our Kaigum, out of their pets' reach. We recommend storing Kaigum and similar products in a secure location to ensure the safety of our dogs. If you suspect your dog has ingested any product containing xylitol or other harmful substances, contact your veterinarian or an emergency animal clinic immediately.
